a five-star hotel with jacuzzi and big bathrobes.
I always book a room with two beds,

one for her to lounge on. She eats both
of the mints on the pillows. She won't start the day

till we've read the morning news, and if the
croissants are stale, there's hell to pay. Sometimes

I look around to find she's disappeared,
gone off for a pedicure. She speaks to me

in languages I can't understand--she's pretending
to be in Paris, strolling the Champs-Elysees.

She drops allusions to works of art I haven't seen,
thinks I'm a bit of rube. And maybe I am--

doing her work for her, following her every suggestion,
as if she were a goddess. She wants me to take her

to the Greek Isles: the air there will give her fresh ideas.
I know how it works: I'll be carrying the luggage

when she meets a Greek man with curly chest hair
and a deep tan. Then she'll be gone for good.
